Long Term Athlete Development
Athletic Development Indicators
Athletic Development Framework
In the realm of athletic development, it's crucial to understand that chronological age isn't the sole determinant for structuring effective training models, especially for individuals aged 10 to 16. This age group exhibits significant diversity in physical, cognitive, and emotional growth. Instead, we advocate for a more nuanced approach, one that considers individual developmental milestones such as the onset of Peak Height Velocity (PHV).
Peak Height Velocity (PHV)
PHV marks a critical juncture in a child's growth trajectory, influenced by a myriad of factors including genetics, climate, culture, and social environment. Typically occurring around age 12 for girls and 14 for boys, PHV heralds a period of rapid growth, with peak weight velocity following shortly after. This phase is pivotal as it significantly impacts factors like Vo2max, strength, and even menstrual cycle onset in girls.
Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD)
Long-term athlete development requires a systematic and tailored approach, acknowledging the diverse pathways of early and late specialisation sports. Whether it's gymnastics, Badminton or team sports like track and field, each discipline demands a unique training regimen spanning multiple phases.
Key Phases
Foundation - This initial phase focuses on fundamental movement skills, regardless of the sport. It's about fostering a love for physical activity while honing basic abilities like running, jumping, and throwing.
Development - As athletes progress, they transition into refining their skills and learning the nuances of their chosen discipline. This phase is critical for laying the groundwork for future success.
Specialisation - Here, athletes begin to hone their craft, focusing on event-specific training tailored to their chosen sport. Technical proficiency and strategic awareness become paramount.
Competition - As athletes mature, they shift their focus towards competitive performance, fine-tuning their skills and strategies to excel in their respective fields.
Optimisation - The final phase is about maximising performance potential. Athletes refine their training regimens, harnessing every available resource to achieve peak performance on the world stage.
British Athletics Model
Within the British Athletics model, a structured progression unfolds across five stages:
Fundamentals - Emphasising fun and basic fitness, this stage lays the groundwork for lifelong athletic development, targeting ages 6 to 13.
Learning to Train - Focusing on skill acquisition and general fitness development, this phase spans ages 10 to 15, preparing athletes for more specialised training.
Training to Train - Event-specific training takes centre stage here, catering to ages 13 to 17 as athletes begin to refine their skills in their chosen disciplines.
Training to Compete - Athletes hone their competitive edge, addressing weaknesses and optimising their athletic abilities from ages 15 to 19.
Training to Win - The pinnacle of performance, this phase sees athletes maximising their potential and peaking for major competitions, typically beginning at age 18+.
This cohesive framework underscores the importance of a holistic approach to athletic development, one that respects individual differences and fosters long-term growth and success.
The Peak Performance Programme
The Peak Performance Programme is uniquely positioned to support athletes within the 10 to 16 age range by aligning with their developmental needs and milestones. Here's how our programme contributes to their athletic journey:
Tailored Training Regimens: Our programme recognises that one size does not fit all. We craft individualised training plans that consider each athlete's stage of development, leveraging milestones like Peak Height Velocity (PHV) as a guide. By tailoring workouts to their specific needs, we optimise their growth and performance potential.
Holistic Approach: Beyond physical training, we address the cognitive and emotional aspects of development. Our programme incorporates elements such as mental conditioning, nutritional guidance, and recovery strategies, ensuring athletes receive comprehensive support for their holistic growth.
Long-Term Athlete Development: We adhere to the principles of Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD), guiding athletes through the various stages of their athletic journey. By fostering a gradual progression from foundational skills to sport-specific training, we lay the groundwork for sustained success in their chosen sport.
Skill Acquisition and Refinement: Our programme emphasises skill acquisition and refinement, essential for athletes to excel in their respective disciplines. Through targeted drills, technique sessions, and feedback mechanisms, we help athletes master the fundamental skills required for peak performance.
Monitoring and Evaluation: We employ rigorous monitoring and evaluation protocols to track athletes' progress and adjust training accordingly. By regularly assessing performance metrics and physiological markers, we ensure that athletes stay on course towards their goals while minimising the risk of overtraining or injury.
Support Network: Athletes enrolled in our programme benefit from a supportive network of coaches, sports scientists, and fellow athletes. This community fosters a culture of collaboration, motivation, and accountability, empowering athletes to push their limits and achieve their full potential.
In summary, the Peak Performance Programme is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of athletes aged 10 to 16. Through tailored training, holistic support, and a focus on long-term development, we equip athletes with the tools they need to thrive both on and off the field.
